Alcohol (chemical) dependence is a chronic, progressive disease which, left untreated, results in death. The goal of alcohol and drug counseling is to help an individual take responsibility for their addiction, acquire empowerment skills which allow him/her to feel he/she is in control of their life and addiction, and to learn coping skills to deal with a variety of present or future personal problems which could trigger relapse. Family members are also affected by the disease of chemical dependency. Education regarding the biogenetic factors, the progression of the disease and how their behaviors may enable the disease to continue, is an important part of the recovery process. Participation in a Twelve Step program such as AA or NA teaches an individual that in order to recover, one must surrender, make amends, and be of service while trusting in a power higher than one's self.
