(Reactive Attachment Disorders) While children may have attachment problems due to interruptions and/or deficiencies in their care as infants, 'Reactive Attachment Disorder' is a diagnosis reserved for the most severe cases. Attachment problems occur due to lapses or disregard for a child's need for comfort, nurture, stimulation and security. At the most extreme, this disturbance results in serious impairment in the child's ability to form interpersonal relationships as well as exhibiting or developing serious behavior problems. Therapy directly focused on establishing, or re-establishing, the child's connection to caretakers commonly involves the parents (and possible other family members) in techniques and exercises designed to establish trust. |
