(Grief, Loss, Death Issues) The loss of a loved one is one of the most stressful events in one's life. People are not usually prepared for the strong emotional reactions which occur and will experience shock, mental and emotional numbness, difficulty making decisions, and may find it difficult to interact with others who are trying to help Some fear they are 'going crazy' because they can't 'feel'. Others may respond with an alarming fear of what will happen to them without their loved one or what they should do next. It is common for extreme feelings of anger, loss and sadness to be overwhelming at this time. Bereavement therapy helps the survivors understand there is help, that they can make it through this difficult time and that it will take time to pass through the stages of grief. They may need help of others for the first time in their lives. It is not uncommon for people to become extremely depressed after a loss. This depression must be monitored carefully by family and counselor so the individual is able to recover as quickly and comfortably as possible. There is no 'set time' for an individual to recover from this loss and it is not uncommon for the grieving process to take from one to three years.
