Thanks To Yuko Ohigashi | Child abuse has been identified as a major factor in the breakdown of personality development and emotional development of those abused, leaving long-term fears, anger, grief and insecurities. It has become so great a concern in our society that even the suspicion of abuse must be reported to the Department of Child Protective Services (see 'additional resources' below for information on CPS). It is a well established fact that those abused as children may become abusive parents themselves, in spite of their promises they will never do so. It is never too early, nor too late, to address the damage child abuse can, or has, caused. Oftentimes, child abuse is the result of frustration of having to care for children without proper skills or education. Therapy helps clients deal with the pain of both prior trauma, helps prevent future abuse of children, and helps stop the cycle of abuse or self-destructive behaviors. (Abuse of a child, the elderly or handicapped must also always be reported to appropriate authorities, as required by law, to prevent reoccurrence, provide education and to obtain resources to assist both abuser and abused, physically or emotionally.)
