Many clients initially seek counseling from their church minister or church leaders because they feel these individuals have a similar 'faith' background and may be able to help. However, church leaders may not be professionally trained to deal with mental health, in-depth marriage/family issues or crisis situations. Therefore, they may refer members to professionals they know to be Christians, trust, and who are able to provide the clinical knowledge and professional skills necessary for the family's situation. Many Christian ministers also request workshops, classes or training for members on mental health and family issues from Christian counselors.
Christians believe an active and caring God provides insight and wisdom in their daily walk, that it is God who heals and shows direction for life. Some clients may request Biblical direction or prayer during therapy. If this is your desire, please discuss these preferences with your selected perspective therapist prior to actual scheduling of an appointment. Some therapists have a Christian value system, however, do not incorporate prayer or Biblical teaching in sessions.
